The fall of CORE September 13th 2004
Beta 7 was to be a beta well known for large alliances choosing five of their best players to form a "ranking" alliance seperate from the main alliance. These small five man teams were designed to dominate the rankings and find glory for the main alliance and themselves. None of these five man teams dominated the rankings in beta 7 like the CORE. The CORE was an elite force spawned from the NEMO alliance, and CORE was number one from the day they became official on the rankings until their ultimate downfall in one of the grandest and largest scale attacks AstroWars had ever seen.
The elite forces of CORE consisted of Runner, littlegood1 (aka bigevill1), Premnas (aka Zenovia), KingInYellow (aka ME262), and ZoneOne (aka srit1).
For two months into beta 7, CORE would often show as having roughly 40 points more than other 5 man teams who were also playing for points, and this drew a LOT of attention to the alliance. On Septemper 13th, two months to the day the beta started, attacks were launched that would drop CORE in the alliance rankings from number 1 to 27, cost some members well over 200 points, and drop two members over 1000 ranks in the individual rankings.
The CORE achieved their "ranking" dominance by being PURE astro-farmers (with the exception of Runner), with races consisting of +4 growth, +4 production, +3 culture, and -4 attack, -4 defense, -3 speed (minor variations between players).
A quick forum post by Spaceborn, of the alliance Ionstorm, entitled "Operation Apocalypse Now" simply stated "It has begun", [[1]] and let the rest of the AW universe know the massive multi-alliance attacks had been launched against the rank dominating forces of CORE.
The Attack
The attacks were the combined efforts of Project Mayhem, Ionstorm, Das A-Team, Sons of Rana, SolarForce, Swords of the Galaxy and last but not least Empire Solaire.

Although CORE would climb back up the rankings, these are the results the update following the attack on Sep. 13th

In the end, there was nothing
After the attack, Runner would comeback to countdown 6 days towards victory as the number 1 individual player, but was taken down on the last day of the countdown denying him victory as the winner of the beta. The CORE did manage to climb their way back to a respectable rank of 8 overall in alliances.... here's their finish at the betas end Sep 26th.... 13 days after the attack.
