Once you have founded your alliance, you will need somewhere to meet and plan your strategies and conduct diplomacy with other players. AstroWars allows each alliance to create its own recruitment and discussion topic for the current round in the Diplomacy category at the Astrowars Forums, but cannot provide forums due to limitations of server space.
Alliances may therefore wish to set up their own forum, using one of the many free packages available. Below are details of some of the most popular packages and free forum hosting currently used by many alliances in the game.
Free forum software for your own site
- The phpBB Group provide free forum software, but you will need your own web hosting including a SQL database to install it. This is the software used here at AstroWars. Check the link on the right of their main page for suggested web hosting. phpBB.com have their own forums for technical support, but it is English language only. For non-English speakers, you may check out this page and select another preferred support site: http://www.phpbb.com/support/intl.php
- phpNUKE is a modified portal version of phpBB, which adds some extra features (modifications) to the original code, so you don't need to add them yourself.
- phpBB2 Plus is another portal of phpBB, with extra features. This is a German developed clone, with a multi-language support forum, but it is predominantly German language.
Free pre-installed forums with hosting
- Createforum provide a pre-installed modified version of phpBB or Invision software with free hosting.
- MyFreeBulletinboard provide a modified version of phpBB software with free hosting.
- ezBoard offer ad-supported free forums with hosting, as well as a subscription ad-free version.
- InvisionFree offer pre-installed Invision software with hosting. Hosted forums must use English language only. Note: Their servers are very unreliable. They do not respond to problems, and forums hosted here often have multiple page loading failures when trying to read or post inside topics. You are recommended to avoid this host unless you cannot find anything else.
